NestedFunds is a startup that aims to help adult children navigate the complexities of supporting their elderly parents. We’re developing a user-friendly web app from the ground up to simplify financial information and enable easy sharing with parents, making this stage of life feel more supportive and less overwhelming.

I led a team of three UX/UI designers in designing and executing a web app for financial planning. I guided research, wireframing, and prototyping to ensure a clear, intuitive user experience.

Families often face financial uncertainty when planning for their parents’ future. Without clear tools to visualize costs and resources, it isn’t easy to make informed decisions about long-term care and quality of life.

Secondary Research
Our primary demographic is Millennials, so we researched to identify the key aspects of financial tools that resonate with them. Millennials value a playful yet straightforward interface—visually engaging designs while simplifying complex information into easily digestible formats.
We also explored Millennials' perceptions of the elderly. This generation holds great respect for seniors who remain authentic and continue to pursue their goals at any stage of life. They see older adults as individuals full of vitality and admire their perseverance.
User Research
Our primary users are Millennials, particularly first- and second-generation Americans, whose knowledge of retirement in the U.S. is primarily self-taught or learned without formal guidance. A survey revealed the following:
Of Users’ families do not have a retirement plan
Health concerns were a significant theme. Users worried about their parents' well-being due to chronic illnesses or decades of laborious work.
Of users want to guide their parents’ retirement planning
In addition to a lack of knowledge, elderly parents face other user pain points.
Define
Deeper conversations are often hindered by pride (parents feeling they should know more) and fear of the unknown.
Concerns include inheriting debt, unexpected expenses, and managing parents' finances.
Persona
Our user research, which includes surveys, interviews, affinity mapping, and empathy mapping, led to the development of a persona that keeps user needs at the center of our design process. You can explore our UX research in more detail by clicking here.
We created a persona, Alejandro, to represent most of our users. As a first-generation American, he taught himself about finances and government assistance. Alejandro is concerned about his parents, who have labor-intensive jobs, but he’s unsure how to help them. Additionally, when trying to share financial information with his family, he struggles because most of it is in English, which they find difficult to understand. Below you can see the emotional journey the user went through.

Ideate
Problem:
After analyzing our user research, we saw a clear pattern: adult children were feeling overwhelmed by the responsibility of managing their parents' finances. They were concerned about issues such as inheriting debt, unexpected expenses, and making informed decisions for the future.
Solutions:
A simple intake flow to help users enter important details about their parents' needs.
A dashboard to show future financial scenarios in a clear, visual way.
Personalized tips to help lower long-term costs and improve quality of life.
We sketched these ideas into low-fidelity wireframes to quickly test the layout and flow. After gathering feedback, we refined them into mid-fidelity wireframes with more detail and structure. These helped us shape the core experience and ensure it stayed user-friendly and supportive.
Lo-Fi
For NestedFunds, the lo-fi wireframes mapped out the intake form, financial dashboard, and recommendations flow without colors or visuals. This helped us focus on layout, clarity, and user flow before moving into detailed design.
Mid-Fi
The mid-fi wireframes for NestedFunds added structure, hierarchy, and early interaction patterns to our core screens. With clearer text and refined layout, along with placeholders for future content, we were able to test usability and make design decisions with greater confidence.
